European Roots - International Flowerings

I. CELTIC CARAVANS: The Road to Romanticism,
Friday, February 8 - UCSC Music Recital Hall
Julianne Baird, soprano in British Isles folksongs set by Haydn with Linda Burman-Hall, fortepiano.
Co-presented with UCSC Arts & Lectures in partnership with UCSC Department of Music

When Vienna and London 'discover' Irish, Scottish and Welsh tunes, Classicism's affair with the folk tune finally turns Romantic. Internationally-celebrated soprano Julianne Baird joins Festival Artistic Director Linda Burman-Hall to create a memorable prelude to Valentine's Day.

II. RENAISSANCE ROOTS - GLOBAL FLOWERINGS
Saturday, March 2 - Holy Cross Church
Yukimi Kambe Viol Consort

Known for "creativity and fine performance", this dynamic group of young Japanese women has been creating a sensation in other early music festivals. The excellence of their ensemble has won the support of The Japan Foundation for this, their first tour of America, with a program of new and old 'world music' for viol consort.


III. GYPSY CLASSICS
Saturday, March 30 - UCSC Music Recital Hall
Lux Musica Ensemble

Lux Musica: Lars Johannesson - traverso, Amy Brodo - violoncello, Linda Burman-Hall - fortepiano; with Mesut Özgen - 19th century guitar

The Festival core ensemble brings their touring show home to Santa Cruz! Featuring chamber music from the Austro-Hungarian court of Nicholaus the Magnificent, our selection of Hungarian and Transylvanian 'Gypsy' melodies by ethnic Rom composers and gypsy-inspired classics in the ca. 1810 Viennese tradition will surprise and delight you.

IV. ITALIAN FOLK & BAROQUE: An evening in Old Italy La Tarantella Fresca
Saturday, April 20 - UCSC Recital Hall
Directed by Amy Brodo with guest artists to be announced

Set your toes tapping to the sonatas and tarantellas that took 18th century Europe by storm. From the roots of the Baroque to its final flowerings, this program presents both the rich legacy of Italian traditional music and the idiosyncratic stylings of virtuosi who toured the whole continent.


V. SPANISH FOLK & BAROQUE: Fandangos
Saturday, May 11 - Holy Cross Church
Mesut Özgen, guitar with Linda Burman-Hall, harpsichord, and guest artists

Immerse yourself in passionate music from the courts and caves of Spain, including traditional flamenco and virtuoso works by Scarlatti, Soler, Boccherini and others. Pull up a seat by our fire!

All concerts begin at 8:00 PM. The Pre-concert talks (at 7:30 pm) by Artistic Director Linda Burman-Hall educate and give context to the music.
